And Jen Shall be the First Freak to Pick a Film

Okay, here's my proposed structurel:

New films are named on the first day of the month. The designated Filminati member will create a post with the name of the film, as well as any things you want the rest of us to think about and/or watch for while viewing. So Jen, on (or before, since you're the first) March 31, you post your movie choice.

Discussions about the film begin on the last day of the month. Whoever chose the movie creates a new post on the last day of the month to start up and lead the conversation in comments. So Jen, you do that on April 30.

In the meantime, if anyone wants to do a film-related post to spark conversation, by all means do it! Except for when the conversation about the month's movie is rolling along at a good pace, of course. Perhaps the first week of each month should be left to the official movie, but once things die down there, let's fill the space.

If you see any serious flaws in this plan, please don't hesitate to point them out to me. No, not flaws in me, flaws in the plan.

So the big question is, who wants to do next month? First one to say, "Me! Me! Oh, please pick me!" in the comment to this post goes next.

Sounds like a good plan to me!

If I read right, there's a month-long gap between the announcement of a film and the beginning of discussions of it. This will have us all watching a given film in our own time while discussing the previous one, and unable to talk about the one we just saw until the one that follows it has been chosen. I can adapt to this, I just want to see if I understand and that it is generally agreeable.

I have a good pick I think will surprise folks :-)

"Me! Me! Oh, please pick me!"

Just in case you were going for precision :-)

Don, that's the idea - it gives us plenty of time to schedule/watch the new one. If it bugs you you could always wait til the weekend before, but the pressure!

There is another possibility that lies between what I outlined and Joe's suggestion of every couple weeks, and that is that we name the film on the 1st, start discussing on the 15th. That gives us two weeks to watch, two weeks to discuss. We're still only watching one per month, but there's no overlap. Thoughts?

I like that! Some of us older folks with Alzheimer's might not even remember a movie a month later. I know I ... what did I come in here for again?

On de udder hand, I don't know if I can get in there within two weeks. I don't mind that in May we discuss The April Movie, and in June discuss The May Movie. On yet an udder hand, there's no crime missing one now and then anyway. So yeah, cool, whatever. The best rule systems evolve as needed anyway. I presume anyone can initiate a post, just sort of keep it within topic. Sounds fun. I'm so glad my family doesn't think I spend too much time online already.

I like starting the discussion on the 15th. I think waiting a month is too long.

That's what I think.

I kinda agree with Joe here. If someone can't get the film in before the 15th, they could avoid the commentary for a few days until they get the movie watched, then catch up fairly easily... I would think, anyway.

So, rather than have dozens of posts on a single film, would the actual discussion thread be in the comments of the official post from the chooser that begins the discussion, say on the 15th, or on the 1st, whichever we finalize?

I missed that :-)

Jeff said (and we do nothing if not what Jeff says) that the chooser does one post to introduce the movie, then a second to open the discussion, and the discussion takes place in comments. He also said the label of those posts should be done according to genre. See, I'm, like, so totally ready.

I guess I'll tally the votes on this thread and post the discussion opener on the 15th or the 30th accordingly. Personally I'm cool with the 15th cause as Looney says, peeps who haven't watched it yet can just wait til they have and then jump into the comments. That's the beauty of online vs. real-space "meetings" for these sorts of clubs.

Even while vacationing in beautiful Charleston, South Carolina, I still care enough to read up on you guys. I'd vote for starting the discussion on the 15th. Bye!

I guess we didn't officially proclaim Looney the chooser of next months movie, so let's make it official! Looney, name your movie on May 1st!
