"You can urge her in one direction"*

*Name that movie!

So it's a lot of pressure picking the first movie. Cause what if I pick something lots of peeps hate, and then they're all, well that was dumb, and the whole thing crashes before it gets off the ground? On the other hand, I cannot possibly pick something everyone will like, and even if I could, that doesn't make for a very lively discussion, does it?

"You know that awesome part with the helicopter?"
"Yeah, that part was awesome!"
"Yeah, that's what I thought! Awesome!"

So I'll be going with my own opinion and the movie I think will make for the best discussion. But if you'd like to apply a little peer pressure between now and when I pick one next week, here're some of the movies I'm considering:

Best in Show (Theme: improv, when done well, is the funniest kind of funny)
The Royal Tennenbaums (Theme: dark comedy's thin line between hee and ew, plus this is my fave comedy)
Fight Club (Theme: I wish I could write this snappy)
Equilibrium (Theme: just as excellent writing can happen in genre fiction, excellent acting can happen in genre film)
The Quiet Man (Theme: John Wayne so totally is not useless! And comedies that stand up even after the content is dated)
Charade (Theme: no theme really, I just always get this confused with every other Audrey Hepburn movie and wouldn't mind watching it again)
O Brother Where Art Thou (Theme: how some things based on the Odyssey, like this movie, can be great, while others, like Cold Mountain, suck)
Rebecca (Theme: you don't need a theme when you've got Olivier)
Elizabeth (Theme: how important is technique versus story? Can excellent acting and gorgeous shots make up for gaping internal logic failures?)

Hey, now, I was looking forward to Tennenbaums, so don't be mixing it up on me, y'hear?

As film geeky as this is going to sound, I'm just so excited about this whole thing that I have no preference whatsoever. None. Whatever you choose, I'll love, even if I hate it. Though I don't hate anything on your list. And for the record, I can pretty much recite every Fred Willard line from Best In Show from memory.

"Excuse me if this off the subject a little bit, but just take a guess at how much I can bench press. Come on, what do you think? Take a guess. 315 pounds, maxing out at 400!"

I gotta agree -- I'm up for any of the above. Some are more near and dear than others but any of em will make good fodder.

And Fred Willard's commentary in Best in Show is among the funniest -- although the commentators in Dodgeball make me go into seizures.

F'n A, Cotton, F'n A!

I haven't seen ANY of those, so I'm totally looking forward to whatever you choose, Jen! Anyway, none of 'em could be worse than Keeping Up With The Steins, which is what I watched last night.

The Ocho!! I'm so glad I'm not alone.

I've only seen one of those, and I have it on DVD because I will never tire of it. So pick away. This plane won't crash on takeoff. Buzz the neighborhood a little maybe.

Any, but I'm partial to The Quiet Man, one of the few Wayne movies I can take (along with The Cowboys, True Grit, and She Wore A Yellow Ribbon.

My opinion is that asking everyone what movie they want you to pick is against the whole concept in the first place. If it was a collective decision, then we would all vote and watch a movie, not worrying about one person doing some research and "presenting" it. What makes something like this unique is that you could pick 'Glitter' and present it in a way that is important to you and that would be the film that month.

It gives everyone else a chance to look at a film in a different perspective that the one they origianlly saw the film and allow for new appreciation.

I think it would be fun to pick a really bad film and talk about what makes a bad movie.

Hmmmm....maybe that's what I will do.

Good luck and pick the film that is true to you. The one that makes you say. Shit, I love that movie and it says something to me that I want to share with these people.

I also advidse to choose very carefully, because there are enough members that it will probably be a long time before your turn comes up again.

For what it's worth, I posted a "what have you seen?" meme at my blog recently and NO ONE who answered it had seen Rebecca, which is a travesty. I was stunned.

Don't know if it makes a difference but I was thinking of writing up something about it just to convince people to check it out.

NOoo, please don't make me watch "Glitter" or "Showgirls." I beg of you. ;)

If Glitter is ever a selection, I will firebomb this site.

For real.

BTW, the movie quote from the post title is from L.A. Story, in a superfunny exchange concerning what Steve Martin's date may order in a posh restaurant. You think you can order the duck with a financial statement like this?

My blog is dedicated to talking about film and I just posted a discussion on The Science of Sleep by Michael Gondry. I just thought I would give you all a heads up since we talked about posting stuff about films while waiting for the first film to be picked. Plus, I'd like y'all's opinions!
