I Hate Myself For Loving You...And Love Myself For Hating You

A list of films that I like very much, but that are held in disdain by many others. Sometimes I cannot even defend why I like these films; I just do. This is not an exhaustive list, and I invite your contributions!

Movies I Like That Are Hated By Others
Napoleon Dynamite - I love to watch films with goofy, offbeat humor.

The Waterboy - (Or perhaps most goofy Sandler comedies) - Adam Sandler is just so goofy in this film that I love to watch it, even though the story sucks.

Flashdance - Ok, I hated the whole "let's cut off our sleeves and collars" craze after the movie and Jennifer Beals' performance was akin to the cedar plank on my grill, but I still love to watch
Super Troopers - Hated by critics, but loved by me. Those goofy cops just crack me up.

Highly Revered Movies That I Don't Like
Million Dollar Baby - And it's not that I have a problem with the whole merciful killing thing, it's just that the movie devolved from a good fight flick into a depressing movie-of-the-week.

Titanic - UGH. Schlocky, cliched, tragic love story.

Rebel Without A Cause - SNORE, despite the excellent Dean and Mineo performances.

I couldn't take any more Napoleon Dynamite after ten minutes. I like goofy humor -- Dumb and Dumber was hilarious -- but ND made me want to go wash the dishes.

Generally I dislike Adam Sandler. But Fifty First Dates or whatever it was called was actually kind of sweet. And I'm a sucker for Drew Barrymore anyway.

I liked Flashdance. JB had a nice butt.

Thumbs up for Napolean Dynamite. Love that one. Here's just a couple off the top of my head.

Movies I love that other people hate:
- The Cutting Edge
- A Knight's Tale

Highly Revered Movies that I hate:
- Gone With the Wind
- The English Patient

Oh, Teacake. I also didn't care for THe English Patient, and I LOVE The Cutting Edge. Hey, wonder what ever happened to D.B. Sweeney? (He was sooo hot back then.)

Loved Napolean. We've watched it more times than I can count. The only Adam Sandler silly comedy I really liked was Happy Gilmore (I specify "silly comedy" because I thought he was great in Punch Drunk Love and Spanglish).

Movies I loved that are either hated by others, or simply not given the time of day:
Underworld: Evolution
Blade
Taladega Nights (I know people who love this movie, too, but also lots who hated it)
The Last Samurai
Daddy Day Care

Highly Revered movies I didn't like:
The Piano
The Bad Lieutenant (fucking hated this)
Babel
Borat (and I love the character of Borat, as well as all of Cohen's characters)

Finally, a Highly Revered movie that I didn't hate, but didn't think it deserved nearly the accolades it got (including Best Picture):
Crash

The Last Samurai

Despite the Cruise, this is a movie made entirely of Kickass and Awesome.

Crash was something else. I need to see it again.

I liked Talladega Nights, but I gotta say, Will Ferrel movies always have something uncomfortably weird in them.

That's cuz Ferrell is king of the uncomfortably weird. Or he was until Steve Carrell came around.

Jeff: You are an interesting dude. I could not agree with you more about THE PIANO and CRASH and could not disagree with you more about THE BAD LIEUTENANT. And if you are a Catholic baseball fan from NYC, you ought to be ashamed of yourself! If you don't like baseball or never saw Zoe Lund (RIP) do spoken-word stuff or don't know the Paul Calderon-M.Emmett Walsh rule, I can excuse you. But I wish you'd give THE BAD LIEUTENANT one more close watching. Please.

UNREGARDED MOVIES I LIKED:

1) Dumb And Dumber
2) Old School

REGARDED MOVIES I DIDN'T LIKE:

1) The Departed*
2) Malcolm X (or anything by Spike Lee other than She's Gotta Have It or Clockers).

*I can encapusulate my feelings about The Departed with this: who in their right mind would commit cold-blooded murder in broad daylight in the flight path of Logan Airport? Could not suspend disbelief after that. AND Jack Nicholson was a fucking clown.

By the way, thanks O'Tim for kind words on my blog and leading me here.

Great opinions on this blog.

I'm not sure if this is an erudite or square thing to say, but I would recommend watching THE BELIEVER and HALF-NELSON back-to-back to see what range this fucking Ryan Gosling's got. How is he not a big star?

Glad Forrest Whitaker got an award but I still believe his finest performance was in tiny set piece in THE COLOR OF MONEY. An absolute CLINIC in acting while doing almost no speaking.
