Rodgers & Hammerstein

Today's Amazon Gold Box deal is an extra $5 off the The Rodgers and Hammerstein Collection (60% off the list price) -- $39.99

For today only, save 60% on "The Rodgers and Hammerstein Collection," featuring two-disc editions of the classic musicals "The Sound of Music," "Oklahoma!," "Carousel," "The King and I," "South Pacific," and "State Fair."

My favorites are The King & I, The Sound of Music and Oklahoma. I've always liked the dark themes that run through those three musicals and how the film adaptations allow things that a stage production couldn't.

What are your favorite movie musicals, R&H or otherwise?

My ass is spared the spank!

Not only have I SEEN "Oklahoma!” I played Aunt Eller in my HS production. Of course, I wanted to be slutty Ado Annie, but that went to the 5'1 cheerleader (you know, the ones who never actually participated in regular theater, but did so as a one-shot and got the cute, bouncy rolls). I did play a saloon whore in "The Unsinkable Molly Brown" though and LOVED it. Got to sit on and straddle many senior boys.

p.s…I was a HOT Aunt Eller, true that.

My top three forever:

Music Man
Fiddler on the Roof
West Side Story

My three faces would have to be The Wizard of Oz, West Side Story, and The Blues Brothers.

Camelot and West Side Story. I know all the words to every song of both.

Camelot wins if I can only pick one though, which is too bad, because there's nothing for me to own and watch again and again. I can only listen to the soundtrack and imagine Richard Burton and Julie Andrews and Robert Goulet and Roddy McDowall. Or rely on my own memories of Robert Goulet when I saw him do Arthur a few years back. He was awesome, of course, but I'd like a good movie to own on DVD, is that so much to ask?

Although Richard Harris is great, the movie version overall just sucks it. Sucks. It. There are not enough iterations of the word sucks to cover how badly that movie trashes the play. Musical. Are you allowed to call a musical a play? Whatever, you know what I mean. Did I mention the movie sucks?

Yes, Camelot. Definitely. I think I would take out ... Music Man? Fiddler? Toss-up. Doesn't matter, I have DVDs for all four. Very sorry the REAL Camelot isn't on DVD. With that cast, I can almost imagine ...

It's not just the cast (I love Richard Harris), it's how the movie completely fucks over the story with their "It's the 60's, so let's just have everyone have sex" attitude. Not that I'm opposed to sex, but the fact that they don't, in the play, is a huge part of the point. Everyone behaves well and they still get fucked. Hence the word tragedy.

Don hit my top two, in the same order. Music Man totally rawks even if Preston can't really sing. I love how Willson wrote the music _for_ Preston's singing skills and made it all work. I mean, the character Hill comes off as an even better huckster because of it. He cannot be played by a pretty-boy with silver vocal cords, he just can't.

And Fiddler -- ah, talk about yer dark themes! What could be better than demonstrating that life continues even in the darkest and most heart-wearying times? I've also always had a bit of a passion for the minor keys and odd rhythms of Jewish music.

Third would be My Fair Lady. The music and singing capture my soul. Love the horse race scene.

Music Man, Fiddler, West Side Story, and Jesus Christ Superstar... Those are easy picks for me. I prefer the stage-to-screen ones, but I also love classics like Singin' in the Rain.
