March Movie Madness 2009 - Round 1 Results Pt. B

LINDSAY LOHAN REGION

Meryl Streep 30
Nicole Kidman 0

Emma Thompson 25
Joan Fontaine 5

Shirley MacLaine 13
Susan Sarandon 17

Bette Davis 20
Laura Linney 10

ASHTON KUCHER REGION

Robert Duvall 17
Phillip S. Hoffman 13

Daniel Day-Lewis 24
Jeff Bridges 6

Ben Kingsley 17
Humphrey Bogart 13

Jack Nicholson 28
Harrison Ford 2

Duvall vs. P.S. Hoffman made for a spirited match-up, and MacLaine vs. Sarandon and Kingsley vs. Bogart could have tilted with another 3-pointer from each of the losers, but otherwise these weren't that close!

EEKS,Bogey goes down. My heart is heavy.

But NO votes for Kidman kind of makes up for that.

I have renewed faith in this group with the zero votes for Nicole Kidman. She is easily the most over rated actress out there. I was stuck on a 10 hour flight with only Australia to watch. Talk about unwatchable.

Kingsley over Bogart? You people sicken me.

I love Bogey. Everything he ever did, I love.
But Kingsley's range is beyond reproach. He'd have gotten my vote without question.

BOgey had range...he played Rick in every sort of situation. So there.

I love P.S. Hoffman with a passion, but Duvall..he's blown me away since Boo Radley. I'm happy to see him move on. I SO wanted to pick Harrison Ford, because I have tired of Nicholson, but I kept thinking of One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest and I went for Jack. So, Jack and Meryl are the blowouts!

One more thing, Jefe, you loved everything he ever did. Including Bacall? ;)

Srsly, The African Queen sews it up for me with Bogey, but Caine Mutiny and Casablanca are enough range for me for Bogey. This is why I have a tough time with old school vs. contemporaries. The parts written for actors are quite a bit more varied today, so it's tough to pit those golden age folks against stars of today. At least, it's tough for me.

BOgey never played a gladiator or a man like Ghandi, but his portrayals were spot on for what was written.

I loves me some Betty Bacall!

Kingsley's most well-known roles -- Gandhi and Schindler's List -- were phenomenal, but you must see Sexy Beast if you've never seen it. You'll be watching that thing thinking, this is Gandhi?

Bridges is terribly underrated.

I fear all them young 'uns don't know who Shirley Maclaine is. Maybe they've seen Terms of Endearment or Steel Magnolias, but have they seen The Apartment? Have they seen Some Came Running?
That said, good news on the Hanks front.

I know, eh? I picked Shirley, too, based on many of those old movies.

Or Irma La Douce? I mean c'mon, Sarandon is a good actress, but she would've been on my short list to be replaced in the bracket by the likes of Holly Hunter or maybe Judy Holiday.

Obviously not the popular consensus, but I don't like overacting Bette Davis over Laura Linney. The only thing LL has ever done wrong is that atrocious accent in Mystic River.
