M3 2008: Chico Region, Round 1, 1st Half
SCORES:
Big Lebowski 13, Harvey 5
M*A*S*H 12, O Brother 6
When Harry Met Sally 10, Ghostbusters 8
Blazing Saddles 18, Repo Man 0
NOTE: Some combined scores add up to 18, and some only to 17. That's because one participant did not pick every game (opting, instead, to place question marks for matches containing unseen movies). This had the biggest impact in the Harpo Region, where one vote could have forced a tie in two of the matches (which would have gone to the higher seed, overturning the current result).

OMFG /rolls eyes/ MASH over O Brother (seeded far, far, far too low?)
I give up...
Yay!
(Sorry, Loons.)
I don't really know what I'm supposed to be commenting on. A Night at the Opera fell out in the first round. I can't take this whole thing seriously any more.

Exactly... /sigh/
Of course, you also made a funny, whether purposely or not.
Four half-brackets, four wrong (one of mine all the way to the semi-finals).
Congratulations, someone else!

A witch! Burn her! Or him!
Srsly. Not having seen a movie never stops me from having an opinion -- lookit how I'm always dissing Monty P for chrissakes!
Looney - YES! MASH over ANYTHING with fucking pretty boy non-actor George Clooney in it. There, I said it!! And I'm glad, ha ha! He wouldn't be on screen if he didn't make women lube up. I mean, how do you fuck up playing a two-dimensional character like Batman? Even Adam West was better.
As much as I love Big Lebowski, again, the much funnier classic loses to pop culture. Stewart gives me more laughs with his silent gestures in this film than most comedies give me at all. Two of my final four bite it in the first round.

Exactly. Any movie I didn't see lost.
Ditto, Joe. Except Lebowski. I've never seen it but I picked it b/c, although my great uncle walked to school with Jimmy Stewart, I just don't find Harvey terribly funny. It's okay but definitely not among my favorite Stewart films.
Oh and years ago I went to the Stewart museum in Indiana, Pa. to do a story and they had an inflatable rabbit in one of the theater seats. I asked the curator if she would pose with the rabbit for a photo and she said, "What rabbit?"
Whatevs, O Brother is a brilliant comedy and I must assume that anyone who didn't vote for it merely failed to understand it. Go back to watching people slip on banana peels, ya circus animals.
(Shut UP it is NOT about Clooney either! Is NOT!)

Actually, Clooney turned in one of his best performances in OBWAT and a generally subtle and brilliant performance. I wrote a review on Amazon about it, because it totally shocked me out of my anti-Clooney mindset (similar to what you said above.) He's a surprising wonder in that film. MASH is funny but depressing in way.
And, to contradict Joe again, Big Lebowski is a fucking landmark, and way funnier than Harvey.
Way...
"Clooney turned in one of his best performances in OBWAT"
You mean he ALMOST acted? I haven't seen it, but once you see someone disappoint you one time too many (and after having a girlfriend TORTURE me with ER for too damn long)you just get to the point where you won't invest time in that person's work again. In the time it takes me to watch that film I could be watching Being There a 30th time, and still getting something new from it.
The same happens with Harvey, which is why it was in my final four. Of course, I understand that Stewart's performance may be too subtle for some...... :-)
I haven't seen it,
Well fer heaven's sake, boy, what you on about then???? Clooney is a huge surprise, and his performance isn't affected at all. It's actually very three-dimensional, and it takes a little time to get it, I think. You owe it to your love of movies to at least give him one more chance on this one :-)
Did you read the rest of that paragraph?
Yeah, I did, and despite your dang gf and all that other personal crap, you need to get over yourself and see that flick, dood!!!!!! LOL...
Within the white-hot excellentness that was the astonishingly low-seeded O Bro, not seeing it and basing an anti-Clooney fetish on ER, lubricated GF or no (how was this a problem?), is the height of naiveté. I could watch that movie 30 times easy (and prolly am about halfway there). There, I said that.

"He's bona fide. He's got prospects."
"and all that other personal crap"
Personal crap? You mean the part where I watched the guy REPEATEDLY in MANY things and noticing that, IMO, he SUCKED IN ALL OF THEM? For fuck's sake, people, I HATE that shit. I watch a guy enough to know that I don't like him, yet everyone who does is going to tell me I'm wrong because I didn't see a movie that THEY like. (Yes, I made a few comments about Harvey, but I used these things :-) and I let it go after the first round.) Like I'm going to see EVERY movie an actor I don't like is in because he might be good in it. As if these same people didn't also like him in something I thought he sucked in. Sorry, I'm not inclined to start watching everything he makes in hopes I'll start liking it, any more than I'm suddenly going to start seeing remakes of classics in hopes that someday one won't disappoint. Just seeing the films that I have an honest interest in seeing will take up my movie-watching time. My frigging Netflix cue is almost up to 200, for crying out loud.
For the record, I also skip movies with Joel McRae or Ronald Reagan, and after seeing three Tarantino films, I'm most likely to give him a pass as well. And I don't even want to see Rob Schneider in a COMMERCIAL.
Nuff' said- I'm not mad at you, Looney, but it seems that I have to vociferously STRESS that I put some time and attention into my attitude that the talent in the family died with Rosemary.
Now, as for O'Tim.
"the height of naiveté"
That's the second time in a week week I've seen you use that phrase to belittle someone's opinion. Maybe I'm not NAIVE, perhaps you're just too damn easy to please. A possibility. It's quite common in this world. I hope I won't be sorry that I put "Withnail and I" in my queue on your recommendation.
No one else would have bothered me much with that remark because no one else here really knows me that well. That's why getting it from you DOES offend me. I spent many years watching both TV and movies while forming my opinion of George, and it's as valid as any other opinion of mine that you might grace with your approval.
I'm not inclined to start watching everything he makes in hopes I'll start liking it, any more than I'm suddenly going to start seeing remakes of classics in hopes that someday one won't disappoint.
Jeez, Joe, that's not what I asked you to do. I said that you were missing out on a great movie because of your dislike of this guy, who puts in a good show in it as well.
Do as you will, my brother :-)
I'm a pretty big fan of George Clooney as an actor, and as a director (can't wait to see Leatherheads). I never saw Batman & Robin, so luckily my opinion hasn't been tainted there. But Joe, you definitely should not see OBWAT. Because you're exactly right, it would be a waste of your time. It's not that you don't like George Clooney movies, you don't like George Clooney. There's definitely a difference, and as brilliant as I or anyone else think OBWAT is, you won't like it because you'll be bugged by him.
Thank you, Jefe. Even if you secretly think I'm being pigheaded, you UNDERSTAND.

LMAO!
My apologies for causing Joe's ire over the aforementioned phrase, which I confess I used specifically to raise the frothy head of that Joe we know and love. For the record, my first use of the phrase was not intended to belittle anyone specifically, but was definitely putting forth my assertion that I am not easily pleased (with presidential candidates, anyway).
Joe - In addition to Withnail, I'll give a similar recommendation as Jefe: DON'T see Syriana, similar in outstanding ensemble concept to O Bro, but with the former film George Clooney was nominated for Best Supporting Actor by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (a widely varied group of film professionals), and whereby the Oscar did indeed go to him.
P.S. - Batman and Robin sucked for far more reasons than its lead actor, who was no different than anyone else in that film in phoning it in for a hefty paycheck.

Yes. Chris O'Donnell also sucked.
And Alicia Silverstone, and Drew Barrymore, and Arnold Schwarzenegger, and the script, and the cinematography (faux Burton)... shit, are we still talking about the same Batman movie?
I'm probably running a couple crappy ones together...
Um, Eden? Did you say you haven't seen The Big Lebowski?
