Hey, what we need is scores (for the filminati, not the films).

I'll post 1st-round standings later today.

I hearted Moonstruck. Waaah!

Yay for Bringing Up Baby! Moonstruck IS a good flick, though, but this is better and it shows that some folks ARE watching classics, after all.

As far as the standings go, aren't these results taken from the charts we sent you? So the winner would be the one who most frequently picked the movies that were selected overall?

In other words, the winner is the person who would have the most mundane, ordinary, lowest-common-denominator taste in movies?

Yeah, who's the winner?

Sweet! I totally rocked this 2nd half...I'm sure there are those out there who kicked my butt, but overall, I'm feeling pretty confident with my picks..well, except for The Thin Man and Adam's Rib...had to go for the classics.

Precisely. Rushmore is SO much better than Something About Mary. Ugh...

Well, we all wrote out a chart, right? And the "winner" will be that person who consistently chooses the most common, most popular answers. In other words the lowest common denominator.

Does "most popular" equal "highest quality" in films, normally? In music? I've never seen you running out to buy everything that wins a Grammy. In fact, great popularity quite frequently points to the artistic equivalent of the lowest common denominator - that which contains elements designed to appeal to greater masses and is likewise designed to offend as few as possible. In other words, sheer blandness.

Of course, it's harder to offend these days, when you can make people laugh by fucking a pie. I'd rather watch something with wit, and no pie-fucking. Call me old fashioned.

If I had known that the object was to predict the winner, rather than to express my opinion and put forth the films I consider the best, my chart would look quite different, and I wager everyone else's would, too, unless they filled it out to predict the winner in the first place. I'm far more interested in seeing how we all compare in our tastes moviewise, not at all interested in who's taste is the most ordinary.

Next year, let's do pirate movies. Go Captain Blood!!!

Just kidding. A serious suggestion would be doing Oscar winners, but there probably isn't enough Best Picture winners yet to do this with.

Ooh, this is an awesome comment because I get to sound like a condescending teacher:

If you'd have read the rules before filling out your bracket, you'd have known exactly how the tournament would be scored.

Ha!

Yes, those who had watched it vs. those who hadn't bothered...

I disagree that mass appeal equals sheer blandness, even in general terms. The reason I don't strive to acquire new Grammy-winning material is A.) I don't operate with a budget like that and B.) I have a habit of being about 2-3 years behind the times in most things pop culture so that things can indeed be given the opportunity to age well, if at all (Case in point, I have never knowingly heard an Amy Winehouse or Jack Johnson song. But I also won't say they suck just because they are popular. It's just a thing with me).

Interestingly, I submitted a bracket according to what I felt were the best films (I did also read the rules). Just for fun I filled out another one based on what I thought would win, and so far that bracket is only winning with 5 losses compared to 6 for the one I submitted. The two charts didn't look drastically different, which for my part seems to show Joe's and Looney's lack of confidence in their fellow competitors' tastes misplaced.

Right, O'Tim. Britney RULES.

I might buy your spiel if I didn't know your taste in music.

Hey, I filled out two the same way, o'tim. Mine had the same end result, though, and the regionals ALL matched up!
