If this goes anything like last year, I'm screwed.
I'm being penalised for picking great comedy classic films all the rest of you fourteen-year-olds have never seen. I thought I was going to be judged on my taste and discernment, not on how effectively I could fall into line and march in lockstep with people who think jizz in the hair is the equivalent of William Powell and Myrna Loy. If I'd known I was going to score by being the same as all of youse bums, I'd have prepared myself by beating my skull against the wall for half an hour or so, prior to filling out the package of forms sent to me.
Punished for being too clever: it brings back all the cold-sweat memories of the schoolyard. I knew I'd seen that Looney's face somewhere before -- in my childhood nightmares.
Teacher, Teacher, Joe the Troll is copying from me. Make him stop.
Hmmm... Guess I'm counting mine wrong. Will look again, but I thought I had 29. I had all 8 in Chico, and 7 each in the other 3 brackets. Oh well...either way I'm having fun.
great comedy classic films ... taste and discernment ... William Powell and Myrna Loy ... too clever
Sorry, wrong room. Taste and Discernment is four blogs down to your right, just past the chess wing corridor.
I've never seen the words "jizz" and "Myrna Loy" in the same sentence before. I'm not certain if I should be appalled or aroused. She WAS a redhead, after all.
But I do agree with what the appropriately-named-for-the-moment Sour Grapes says about the classics. Today's crop of sex and poop jokes simply can't compare with the cleverness of yesteryear, and with today's audiences it doesn't really need to try.
When I think of Mr. Deeds, I think of Gary Cooper. When I think of Dr. Doolittle (which I very rarely do) I think of Rex Harrison. When I think of "Father of the Bride" I think of Spencer Tracy, and therein lies all the difference.
Oh, and Cody- you're only ahead of me ALPHABETICALLY. :-)
uuuuhhh...was gonna give up a "yea, me", but fear I'll be pummeled and thought less of in the great sphere and formerly warm bosom of FFFC. I'm a redhead...like me again??? ;) Oh, and a bit pyschic...perhaps I just kknnneeewwww how the picks were going.
btw...coming to get you Brad! Can't wait for more results.

*sigh* It's true, I just didn't expect it to be so prevalent here at filminati...
Fer cryin' out loud, but we ARE taking comedy seriously, aren't we. Have a friggin' cookie, peeps.
Whoosh
I'm reposting a comment I left on a post below, so as to try to get the greatest response:
From the way the brackets looked to me, I think most people made most picks based on their hearts. My guess is people picked with their hearts on the movies they really have an affinity for, and for the match-ups where they had less of an interest, they picked what they figured would be the "favorite."
Am I right?
I picked whatever I thought was the funnier or overall better film. "Overall better" became more prevalent as I moved inwards. Movies I haven't seen generally lost unless I really didn't like the one I had seen, and the one match where I hadn't seen either was just a guess.
Hey baby, I think you miscounted my score too. I'm getting a total of 47. Be a sweetie and update ;)
Am I right?
With perhaps one exception, I chose the obvious candidate from two known films. There was only once I had trouble choosing. If I hadn't seen a film I tried to imagine if I might like it, based on who was in it etc. I think there were one or two cases where I hadn't seen either film (the two Belushi films, for example. Wild horses wouldn't drag me to watch John Belushi) in which case I couldn't care less who won, so I just picked one at random.
Whatever. If my fave movie makes it to the finals, I'm good. If not? Man oh man, I will be inconsolable. No. I will console myself by announcing that y'all just DON'T KNOW WHAT'S FUNNEH!
Thanks for looking twice at the standings.
I love the classics, and was so happy to see His Girl Friday and Some Like it Hot, Adams Rib...etc.. Kate Hepburn, Spencer Tracy, Tony Curtis, Cary Grant...all classic comedy and could not be duplicated in this day and age. They are all true masterpieces in my mind, or maybe I'm just really old.
But that being said, seeing my husband laughing so hard he fell off the couch while watching The Big Lebowski, (which he never would have done watching Adam's Rib) you just gotta look at both sides of the spectrum and say 'gee comedy has so many definitions'.
Very well said, Krissy!
With the amount of turmoil that's shown up so far, I can't wait to see what the later rounds bring!
I've been thinking about all this "classics" talk, and I'd like to point out that the following movies, which I would consider classics, won in the first round:
Dr. Strangelove
Odd Couple
Producers
His Girl Friday
The Graduate
Annie Hall
Bringing Up Baby
MASH
Some Like it Hot
Duck Soup
Philadelphia Story
It's a Mad... World
It Happened One Night
Plus these that may be a little more recent but still considered classics by many:
Blazing Saddles
Young Frankenstein
Holy Grail
Life of Brian
That doesn't look to me like there's any "cultural deficiency" going in here. Just different tastes in movies.
Well, it was a cultural deficiency to leave Office Space off the bracket, but other than that... ;)
(See what I did there? I said I wouldn't complain about stuff left off, and then I did. I went the other way.)
I'd have just put it against Grail, so I saved you the heartache of having to vote against it. You should thank me.
You left Harold & Maude off the classics list. Your bad...
Harold and Maude lost. I listed classics that won the first round. So, I guess that makes it your bad, eh?
Easy with that yardstick, teach ;)
Yup, my bad. I thought you were listing the "classics" that were on the initial list. Sorry.
You're right, O'Tim. I got a little feisty, though not as feisty as Feist, who I find hot and cool at the same time. No worries, Looners, and my apologies for cracking your knuckles like that!
Not at all, dude. It was funny :-)
